Understanding NDIS Funding Categories: Core, Capacity Building, and Capital

Home / Understanding NDIS Funding Categories: Core, Capacity Building, and Capital

When you receive an NDIS plan, your funding is split across three broad categories: Core, Capacity Building, and Capital. Understanding the difference helps you get the most out of your plan.

Core supports cover everyday assistance — things like help with daily activities, transport to appointments or community activities, and consumables. This is usually the most flexible category, meaning funding can often be moved between different types of core support as your needs change.

Capacity Building supports are designed to help you build skills and independence over time. This includes support coordination, therapy, employment support, and help with finding and keeping a place to live. Unlike core funding, capacity building funds are generally tied to a specific purpose and can't be moved between categories.

Capital supports fund higher-cost items such as assistive technology, equipment, and home or vehicle modifications, as well as Supported Independent Living (SIL). These require quotes and approval before funds are released.

Knowing which category your supports fall under makes it easier to plan your budget and avoid running out of funding partway through your plan period. A support coordinator can help you track spending across all three categories.
