Why Community Participation Is a Core Part of the NDIS
16 October 2024 · By GTI Team
Community participation funding supports participants to take part in social, recreational, and community activities — anything from joining a local sports team to attending art classes or volunteering.
This kind of support matters because social connection and a sense of belonging are strongly linked to overall wellbeing, and isolation can make other challenges harder to manage.
Support workers assisting with community participation often help with more than just transport — they can help build confidence, develop social skills, and navigate new environments.
Participants are encouraged to choose activities that align with their own interests and goals, rather than a one-size-fits-all program, which tends to lead to better long-term engagement.
Community participation goals are often reviewed alongside other capacity-building goals, since confidence gained socially frequently supports progress in other areas of a participant's plan.
