Home and Vehicle Modifications Under the NDIS

Home modifications funded through the NDIS might include ramps, bathroom modifications, widened doorways, or handrails — changes that make a home safer and more accessible for a participant to live in.

Vehicle modifications can include hoists, hand controls, or other adaptations that allow a participant to drive or be transported safely.

These are considered capital supports and generally require an assessment from an occupational therapist, along with quotes from qualified tradespeople, before the NDIA will approve funding.

Because home modifications can involve significant cost and disruption, it's worth planning well ahead of when the changes are actually needed, as the assessment and approval process can take time.

Renters can also access home modification funding in some circumstances, though this generally requires landlord consent, so it's worth having that conversation early in the process.
