Assistive Technology and the NDIS: From Everyday Aids to Complex Equipment

Assistive technology (AT) covers any device or equipment that helps a participant perform tasks they otherwise couldn't, or increases their safety and independence in doing so.

The NDIS groups AT into risk and cost categories, from basic items like non-slip mats or grab rails, through to complex equipment such as powered wheelchairs or communication devices, which usually require an assessment and quote from a qualified professional.

Lower-cost, lower-risk items can often be purchased fairly quickly with core funding, while higher-cost or more complex items go through a more detailed request process, including reports from an occupational therapist or other relevant specialist.

It's important to consider not just the purchase of equipment but also ongoing costs like maintenance, repairs, and eventual replacement, which can also be included in funding requests.

Trialling equipment before committing to a purchase is often possible and recommended, particularly for expensive or complex items, to make sure it genuinely suits the participant's needs.
